Many of the core elements of the earlier movies are retained here, including the increasingly annoying found-footage gimmick.. Rod Lurie's bird-brained remake of "Straw Dogs" doesn't work on its own terms, and it can't hold a candle to the unruly, unstable merits of Sam Peckinpah's 1971 original.. A shift in focus helps revive the low-budget horror series, despite the near-absence of returning cast members.. The new 'Straw Dogs' is one of the more brutal films in recent years.. There's no payoff...
